Our Mission

To represent, lead and inspire.

Our Mission:

The mission of I RISE is very simple – to provide a platform to empower women of colour and non-binary people of colour, particularly those at universities and other educational institutions, to represent, lead and inspire ourselves and our communities.

We recognise that these places can be elitist and exclusionary, often leading to a lonely experience, perhaps too afraid to speak up for ourselves. Well, not anymore!

“Issues that are faced by People of Colour and especially Women of Colour have been disregarded for too long and I think it’s a brilliant idea that this magazine is going to address the issues we face through creative forms such as writing and art.”

I RISE exists to provide the space for us to share our talent, happiness, frustration and concerns – without fear of judgement or exclusion. We are so tired of our identities being tokenised, appropriated, weaponised, and capitalised against us. We have the power to take sole control of our narratives and express them in whichever way we want – and now more than ever is the time to do it!

Our Values:

  • Inclusivity – this is incredibly important, and very sadly, inclusivity has been reduced to nothing more than a glorified buzzword. We truly believe in an inclusive space – and we highly value diversity in all its kinds – from age, gender identity, sexual orientation, religious belief, disability, race and so on.
  • Equality – we are equal in these spaces, and we should treat each other accordingly.
  • Wellbeing – taking care of yourself should never be compromised.
  • Empowerment – this is all we are about after all. We seek for us to empower you, and for you to empower us.
